What is an AI workspace?

By the Friday Work team · Updated 1 October 2026

An AI workspace is a shared place where a team works with AI. It holds the models or agents, the context they need and the tools they use, so the work does not live in one person’s private chat.

What are the main types of AI workspace?

TypeBuilt forTypical work
Docs and wiki workspacesNotes, projects and company knowledgeWriting, summarizing, searching your docs
Multi-model chat workspacesUsing several AI models in one shared placeQuestions, drafts, research
Agent and automation buildersBuilding agents that run a workflowSupport, sales and operations tasks
Multiplayer agent workspacesPeople and agents working live on the same taskCoding, review, research, reports

Most teams end up using more than one. The type matters because it decides what the workspace is good at.

What should an AI workspace have?

  • Shared context, so nobody has to explain the task again.
  • Shared agents, saved with their instructions and skills.
  • The tools your team already uses, connected over MCP.
  • Clear control: who can steer an agent, and how to stop it.
  • A record of who asked for what, and what happened.
  • A choice of models, so each job can use the right one.

What is a multiplayer AI workspace?

A multiplayer AI workspace is the live kind. People and agents are in the same session at the same time, with the same context. Read more in what is multiplayer AI.

Friday Work is a multiplayer AI workspace for teams and coding agents. Your teammates and your agents share a session, and you build and reuse agents in the agent workspace.

How do you choose an AI workspace?

  1. Name the work. Writing, coding, support and research need different things.
  2. Decide who takes part: one person, a team, or a team with agents.
  3. Check control and record. Can people steer and stop agents, and is there a log?
  4. Check the tools and models it connects to.
  5. Try it on one real task, on a free plan if there is one.

Common questions

Is an AI workspace the same as a chatbot?

No. A chatbot is one assistant in one chat. A workspace is a shared place with agents, context and tools that a team uses together.

Do I need a workspace made for coding agents?

If your team writes code with agents, yes. Coding work needs a shared repository, visible changes and review, which general workspaces do not offer.

Is there a free plan?

Friday has one. Free includes 3 people in a session and your own coding agents, which are never metered. See the pricing page for the details.
