Multiplayer AI vs multi-agent AI
Multi-agent AI means several AI agents working together on a task. Multiplayer AI means several people and agents working together in one shared session. One is about agents coordinating. The other is about people and agents coordinating.
What is the difference?
| Multi-agent AI | Multiplayer AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Who is involved | Several agents | Several people and one or more agents |
| The main question | How do agents split up and hand off work? | How do people and agents work on the same thing? |
| Typical problem | Agents lose context or overwrite each other | People cannot see or steer what an agent is doing |
| What you need | Roles, handoffs, shared state | A shared session, shared context, clear control |
What is multi-agent AI?
Multi-agent AI splits a job between agents with different roles, such as a planner, a builder and a reviewer. The agents pass work to each other until the job is done.
It can run with no person involved at all.
What is multiplayer AI?
Multiplayer AI puts people in the same session as the agents. They see the same context and can steer. It works with a single agent too. Read more in what is multiplayer AI.
Do you need both?
For team work, yes. A team of agents with nobody watching is automation, and it is hard to trust. A team of people sharing one agent is still limited by that one agent.
Real team work has several agents and several people, in one place, with the record kept.
How does Friday handle both?
A Friday shared session holds several agents, each in its own lane. Agents hand work to each other, and every handoff shows in the session. People are in the same session. Each agent has one driver, and others can suggest, request control or interrupt.
You build the agents once in the agent workspace and reuse them.
Common questions
Is multiplayer AI a kind of multi-agent AI?
No. They answer different questions. One session can be both, or either.
Can one agent be multiplayer?
Yes. One agent with several people steering it is multiplayer.
Which should a team start with?
Start multiplayer: get the team into one session with one agent. Add more agents when the work needs them.
