AI agent handoff: how to pass work between agents

By the Friday Work team · Updated 1 October 2026

A handoff passes a task, and the context it needs, from one agent to another agent or to a person. A good one carries what was decided, not just what was said.

What goes wrong in a handoff?

There are two common failures. Passing the whole history buries the point. Passing a short summary drops the reasons. Either way, the next agent starts with a gap.

What should you pass along?

  • The goal.
  • What is done and what is left.
  • Decisions made, and why.
  • The files or links involved.
  • Anything to watch out for.

What should you leave out?

  • Dead ends that no longer matter.
  • Raw logs.
  • Chatter that does not change the next step.

How do handoffs work in Friday?

In a Friday shared session, one agent can hand work to another, and the handoff shows in the feed. Everyone is in the same session, so the receiving agent and the people watching see the same context. Handoffs between agents are on Pro and Max.

A person can pick up any lane cold from the session and its catch-up digest.

Common questions

Can a person pick up from an agent?

Yes. They open the session, read the feed and the digest, and continue.

Are handoffs on the Free plan?

Handoffs between agents are on Pro and Max. Free allows 1 agent per session.

How is a handoff different from a multi-agent system?

A handoff is one step in it. See multiplayer AI vs multi-agent AI.
