Best AI coding agents for 2027: pick two, not one

By Arun Dass · Published 4 November 2026

There is no single best AI coding agent for 2027, and we do not rank them: no benchmark we trust compares all of them fairly. The better question is which two to run together. Qovery’s forecast, published in August 2026, says that in 2027 most teams will run two coding tools, not one. This guide lists the agents worth knowing, who makes each, and how to pick two that work well together.

Why pick two?

Your work shouldn’t own your day, and the agent in front of you shouldn’t be a single point of failure. A second agent gives you a second opinion, a different model, and somewhere to carry on when the first reaches its usage limit.

Qovery, an infrastructure company, wrote in August 2026 that most teams in 2027 will run two coding tools, such as an agent in the editor for interactive work and an autonomous one for well-specified tickets. That is a forecast, not a measurement, but it matches what many developers already do.

Which coding agents are worth knowing?

These are the coding agents Friday runs by name, each from its maker’s own documentation (checked 4 November 2026). The list is in no order of quality. Each has a command-line tool; what it signs in with, a plan, an account or an API key, varies by maker.

Friday also runs any agent that speaks the Agent Client Protocol (ACP), so the list is not closed. New agents appear often, and so do changes to the ones above. Check each maker’s page before you rely on a detail.

How do you choose your two?

  1. Start with the agent you already have a plan for. That is your first, and it costs nothing extra to keep.
  2. Add one from a different maker, so you get a different model and a second opinion, not the same one twice.
  3. Give both the same small task, each in its own copy of the repository, such as a git worktree on its own branch.
  4. Keep the pair whose diffs you review fastest and trust most. Review, not typing, is what limits how much you can run.

If you want open-source options, we checked the licences in open-source AI coding tools for 2027. For two specific agents, see Claude Code vs Codex, or the three-way Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.

How do you run two together?

Friday runs your coding agents side by side on your own computer, on their own plans and sign-ins, with a task board, and each agent can work in its own git worktree. When one reaches its usage limit, the task moves to another agent with a record of what the first did and changed. The agents run on your computer, so they stop if it sleeps. See how to run multiple coding agents at once and the docs on which tools Friday runs.

What is Friday?

Friday is a free, open-source (MIT) harness for coding agents that work as a team. It runs on your own computer with no account: the desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, or one command with Node.js 22 and Git.

  • Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and 13 more coding tools (16 by name, plus any ACP agent) run side by side on their own plans and sign-ins.
  • One agent splits a job into a task board, the others pick up tasks, and every finished task is checked before it counts as done.
  • Agents message each other as they work, and each can work in its own copy of the repository.
  • When a tool runs out of usage mid-task, the task moves to the agent best placed to finish it.
  • Review each run’s changes line by line, with git built in.
  • No account; anonymous usage counts you can turn off; it listens on 127.0.0.1 only.

Install it with npx github:splashxmoon/friday or from GitHub; see the docs. Friday Team, the hosted version for several people in one session, is available to companies: talk to us.

Common questions

What is the best AI coding agent for 2027?

We do not name one. Benchmarks do not compare all agents fairly, and the right choice depends on the plan you already pay for, the models you prefer and where you work. We suggest picking two from different makers.

Why run two coding agents?

A second agent gives you a different model and a second opinion, and it can carry on when the first reaches its usage limit. Qovery’s August 2026 forecast says most teams will run two coding tools in 2027.

Are these agents free?

It varies. Some are open source, many sign in with a subscription you may already have, and some need an API key. Check each maker’s page for what it costs and what it signs in with.

Can I use agents from different makers on one project?

Yes. Give each its own branch or git worktree and review each diff before merging. Friday runs them side by side on your own computer.

How often is this list updated?

It was checked on 4 November 2026. Coding agents change quickly, so the date is on the page and we re-check it.
